Hi Reader, There’s something I say during private coaching sessions that has become very important to me. After someone makes breakthroughs in how they think, behave, or handle life, I say, “I’m very proud of you.” It's heartbreaking to hear so many people get quiet and reply, “Nobody’s ever said that to me before.”Grown, capable adults. People running companies, raising families, or holding everyone else together…never really feeling appreciated. Something else interesting is that the people who hear it least are usually the ones handing it out all day. The encourager, the fixer, the one everybody calls and ‘dumps on.” Often, nobody further up the chain does the same for them. To make it worse, when that longing for praise, validation, or recognition shows up, many have been led to believe wanting that is vanity, weakness, or something to repent. It isn't. Needing to matter to someone is as human as hunger. We were built that way, and those who say they don’t need it are often the ones who never got validation growing up…and rarely give it now. So, two things today. First, praise more than you criticize. And don’t just say, "Good job.” Say why you believe that. It takes eleven seconds, and people remember it for years. Second, praise yourself. Whatever you carried this year that nobody saw. What you did tired. What you did scared. What you keep doing because it’s necessary. Take time to appreciate yourself. And know that I'm proud of you for that too. If you want to tell me what you got through this year, hit reply. I read every email. :) Tim Tim Shurr, MA PS. If you or someone you know brings speakers in for training or conferences, I’d appreciate an introduction. |

Hi Reader, Thursday, I told you about the hidden parking brake set in people’s brains. That invisible block that holds you back no matter how hard you press the gas. I’ve spent a long time trying to understand what actually creates those mental barriers to success, so that we can bust through them. Because here’s what never made sense to me: Why can two people have roughly the same intelligence, talent, ambition, and opportunity…yet one keeps moving forward while the other keeps getting...
Hi Reader, I’ve been thinking about Chutes & Ladders lately. Remember that game we played as kids? You’d climb the ladders, getting closer and closer to the top… Then you’d land on a chute that hurls you back toward the bottom…often right when you’re about to win. :( Life can feel like that sometimes. You work hard. You climb. You finally start getting somewhere. And then… Chute!(That’s the PG version of what most of us say in those situations.) Back down, sometimes almost to the beginning....
