Signal vs. Noise: How to Get More of What You Want (Quicker)

Tim Shurr VIP High-Performance Newsletter

Hi Reader,

Have you ever finished a busy day, but felt like you hadn't made much progress toward what ultimately matters?

You answered emails, returned calls, attended meetings, updated your website, and handled unexpected requests.

Your day was full, but the progress that could make the biggest difference in your life or business barely moved.

To shift into high performance, where momentum is attained with peace rather than pressure, one must learn how to differentiate between signal and noise.

Kevin O'Leary, known as Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank, once shared a story about learning the secret to achieving BIG goals while working for Steve Jobs.

Jobs was not a nice guy, yet he changed the world with his business model, so O’Leary paid attention. Jobs said that too much time is wasted on activities that do little to move the needle.

Then he shared Apple’s success model: Every day, identify three activities that (you believe) will make the biggest difference in your business. Then, focus on getting those activities done within the next 18 hours… no matter what it takes.

Not ten priorities. Not an elaborate To-Do list. Three high-value activities.

“Only pay attention to the signal, and train yourself to ignore the noise.”

Signal Is What Moves You Forward. Noise Is What Distracts You.

Signal is the work that directly advances your most important goal.

Noise is the activity that consumes your time and attention without producing meaningful progress toward that goal.

For example, if your goal is to grow your revenue, making calls to prospective clients is signal. Redesigning your website for the twentieth time is noise.

Both activities can feel productive. Only one moves revenue forward faster.

Noise also comes from internal distractions. You know the proposal is waiting, or an uncomfortable conversation needs to happen, but you'd rather watch another YouTube video on how Claude will run your business for you.

The loudest noise stems from the part of your mind that wants to subconsciously avoid discomfort. That’s why it’s essential to regularly monitor your beliefs and self-talk.

You may consciously want the result, yet unconsciously hold a belief that makes taking action feel difficult, risky, or pointless. The self-talk then becomes the story about ‘how the market is killing my business,’ ‘there aren’t any opportunities out there right now,’ or ‘I’ve tried this before and it failed.’

When a limiting belief is runs in the background of your mental operating system, you can overlook an opportunity sitting in front of you. (I bet $100 there’s a lucrative opportunity in front of you right now that you’re not noticing or paying attention to.)

Identify Your 3 Highest-Value Priorities

How do you know which three priorities deserve your attention? They will make themselves known when you start thinking this way.

You may feel a gut-level nudge toward a particular project. A deadline makes the next step obvious. Or it’s an activity you've been putting off. Pay attention to what you're resisting.

“Where you resist, persist!”

The task you've been avoiding may be the very task that deserves your attention first.

Ask yourself:

  • Which three activities will create the greatest progress toward my goal today?
  • Out of these three, which one needs first priority?
  • Why will getting these three items completed in this order immediately generate momentum? (This question produces emotional buy-in.)
  • When should I begin? (Hint: Now!)

You can also ask yourself, “Why have I been putting a certain action off? What am I afraid will happen?” This will help you identify the limiting belief you need to upgrade.

“You don't need a perfect plan to start. Just clarity about what to start on… and then GO!”

Create Sacred Time

Once you've identified your three priorities, block protected time for them on your calendar.

I call this Sacred Time.

During Sacred Time, nothing interrupts your focus. You aren't casually checking messages, responding to notifications, or allowing someone else's priorities to take over your schedule.

Protect this time:

  • Put your phone somewhere you cannot see or reach it.
  • Turn off notifications.
  • Close email and unnecessary browser tabs.
  • Tell colleagues, family, or staff that you are unavailable unless there's a genuine emergency.
  • Work on the priority you selected until it’s done. Then, and only then, move on to the next one. (NO multitasking.)

Treat this appointment with the same respect you'd give an important meeting with your most valuable client. Your highest-value work deserves your highest-quality attention.

Turn Obstacles Into Your Next Goal

Sometimes you know what you want, and even know what actions to take, but progress keeps stalling. That's a signal worth investigating.

Ask your favorite AI program to conduct a constraint analysis of your goal and plan. Have it identify the obstacles, missing resources, assumptions, risks, and unresolved decisions that could prevent you from succeeding.

Then make solving the most important constraint your next goal because sometimes the fastest way to reach your destination isn't to push harder. It's to remove the obstacle standing between you and the next positive result.

“The problem becomes the path.”

Remember, the biggest obstacle is often not external, but rather an internal rule or perspective that’s causing lag.

If you believe a difficult conversation will damage a relationship, you may keep postponing it. If you believe an opportunity is beyond your reach, you may never pursue it. If you believe your efforts won't make a difference, procrastination can become remarkably convincing.

Upgrading those beliefs produces more momentum than anything else you can do.

Less Noise. More Signal.

Start today.

Identify your three priorities. Schedule your Sacred Time. Protect it, and when you feel resistance, don't automatically turn away. Get curious about what that resistance is revealing.

“Use resistance to unlock resolve.”

Your next breakthrough may not require more hours, motivation, or a more complicated plan.

Instead, practice recognizing the signal, turning down the noise, and taking massive focused action on what matters most.

Less noise. More signal. Better results. Quicker!

Tim Shurr’s High Performance Newsletter Hi Reader, When you're happy, do you ever catch yourself thinking, "This is too good to be true. Something bad is going to happen"? Often, we're not afraid of happiness itself, but of losing it and crashing. Some even unconsciously decide to allow themselves to feel relaxed or joyful because they don’t want to ‘then be blindsided.’ “Keep your expectations low and you won’t be disappointed.” The motto of those who achieve little in life because they are...

Tim Shurr VIP NewsletterHi Reader, I met bestselling author and psychologist, Dr. Wayne Dyer on five separate occasions. I still have a photo of the two of us together. He once told a story that I still think about today. Imagine someone hands you a million dollars and says you can walk into any store and buy whatever you want. So you find a rug you think is hideous, pay ten thousand for it, and have it delivered. Then you go to a dealership, pick out a car that's ugly and uncomfortable, and...

Hi Reader, Dr. Marty Seligman spent decades studying learned helplessness, depression, optimism, and happiness. One of the questions he became fascinated with was this: Why do some people go through incredibly difficult circumstances and shut down, while others go through equally difficult circumstances and somehow become stronger? His early research on learned helplessness showed something profound. When people repeatedly experience situations where they feel they have no control, no choice,...
